HISTORY

Although the first regulation on a service operating in the field of labour and employment in Bosnia and Herzegovina was passed in 1900, 04 April 1909 was taken as the official date of establishment of employment services when the Order on Labour Mediation Offices was passed.
Orders on establishing mediation offices for employees, unemployed workers and workers' supports were passed on 13 April 1919.  The Mediation Office was founded that year in Sarajevo. The Labour and Employment Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina is nowadays housed in a building built in 1927.
Over the past hundred years, employment services have had different names and organization:

  • Labour Exchange 1945-1946,
  • Mediation Service in Framework of Trade Unions 1946-1948,
  • Labour Force Administration 1948-1952,
  • Labour Force Mediation Office 1952-1960,
  • Institution for Employment of Workers 1960-1965,
  • Community of Employment Affairs or Employment Service 1965-1967,
  • Basic and regional SIZs (self-governing interest communities) and Confederation of Employment SIZs 1975-1985,
  • Employment SIZ of B&H 1985-1990,
  • Employment Service of B&H from 01 October 1990,
  • Labour and Employment Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina as of 01 August 2003.

The Labour and Employment Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, established in 2003, has taken an honorable role in preserving the labour market tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Jointly with other institutions operating in the field of labour and employment, it will further carry out all activities necessary to improve employment and quality of service provision to the unemployed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
